The Oracle Public Cloud was announced at
Oracle Open World in October 2011.
There are currently 5 areas that the Oracle Public Cloud Covers:
Database Services
Java Development Services
CRM
Human Capital Management (HR)
Social Networking
The Cloud Platform Oracle is presenting is
implemented on Exadata and Exalagoic based on open standards model that
allows organisations to develop and host solutions on the Oracle Public Cloud and then port them to other
Cloud platform providers if they so wish.
The service is described as a
platform-as-a-service and will be able to support java based development, fusion middleware,
Currently the cloud offering is US based and
will only be open to US customers which means that UK and European organisations that want to use the service will
have to wait due to data residency and compliance issues.
There is already some lag in the Cloud
adoption curve in the UK and based on comments made by Tyler Jewell Head of Product Management for the Oracle
Cloud, data centre's will be be built on a "per region basis" and only after the US model has been proven and is
returning revenues
Further releases and updates will be
available in 2012.
The Oracle Public Cloud will be an open
platform based upon an monthly fee allowing organisations to port their Oracle infrastructure and applications to a
fully Oracle supported cloud model.
It will be interesting so see how this
affects the relationship and dynamics between Oracle and Amazon
Web Services (AWS) and the pay-per-hour model that is operated by AWS would appear to be preferable
to a monthly engagement.
